Please read Section 4 carefully. Tanli shows you tan previews on your own photo, compares your check-in photos over time, and can keep a log of time you spend outside with the local UV Index — it does not make sun exposure safe, and using the app does not change the real health risks of UV exposure.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Dillon Keating, the developer of Tanli ("Tanli," "we," "us," "our"), governing your access to and use of the Tanli iOS application and any related services (together, the "Service"). By downloading, installing, or using Tanli, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Tanli. If you are under 18, you may only use the Service with the involvement and permission of a parent or legal guardian, who should review these Terms — and in particular Section 4 — with you before you do. UV exposure risk is not lower for younger skin; if anything, cumulative sun damage that starts earlier in life carries it forward longer.
By using Tanli you represent that you meet this requirement and that everything you tell the app about yourself — including your questionnaire answers — is accurate to the best of your knowledge.
Tanli is a tan preview and photo-tracking tool. From a photo you take, it estimates your current skin tone and generates preview images at a few tan depths so you can see shades on your own photo. Check-in photos you take later are compared with your starting photo, so you can see how your skin looks over time. If you choose, Tanli also keeps a log of time you spend outside — timed with a simple stopwatch or entered afterwards — with the local UV Index, read from your device's location, saved alongside it. None of this is a medical device, a diagnostic tool, or professional advice of any kind. Tanli never suggests how much sun to get, and time outside never counts toward your tan: progress in Tanli comes only from your photos. If your time in the sun in a day reaches a limit for your skin type, Tanli tells you to get out of the sun. That limit is only a warning: staying under it does not mean your sun exposure was safe.
Tanli is not a substitute for medical or dermatological care. It does not diagnose, treat, or assess any skin condition, and it cannot tell you whether a mole, mark, or reaction is normal. If you have a concern about your skin — including anything that looks new, changed, or unusual — see a licensed physician or dermatologist. Do not delay seeking medical care because of anything Tanli shows you.
Tanli does not sell, operate, or endorse tanning beds, sunlamps, or any tanning product, and nothing in the Service is an endorsement of indoor tanning.
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun carries real, well-documented health risks, including but not limited to:
These risks exist whether or not you use Tanli, and Tanli does not eliminate or meaningfully reduce them. Tan-depth previews, photo comparisons, UV Index readings, and anything else the app shows you are estimates or illustrations — not a personalized medical risk assessment, not a dermatologist's judgment, and never an indication that any amount of sun exposure is safe for you. Tanli's estimates cannot account for your full medical history, medications (some of which increase photosensitivity), or the countless individual factors that affect how your skin actually responds to the sun.
If you choose to spend time in the sun — whether or not you time or log it in Tanli — that choice, and everything that follows from it, is yours. By using the Service, you acknowledge these risks and voluntarily assume full responsibility for any sun or UV exposure decisions you make, including decisions informed by anything Tanli shows you.
Stop exposure immediately if you notice redness, burning, pain, stinging, blistering, itching, dizziness, nausea, or any other concerning symptom — stop right away, and never stay out to reach a number or a look. See a doctor for anything that doesn't resolve or that concerns you.
Nothing in this section is intended to discourage you from wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, or any other precaution you'd otherwise take. Tanli's timer only records how long you've been outside, and its daily sun-limit warning only ever tells you to get out of the sun: nothing in the app means any amount of sun is safe. Use your own judgment, and follow the advice of a healthcare professional over anything in this app whenever the two conflict.
When you take or upload a photo in Tanli, you grant us a limited license to use, reproduce, and process that photo solely to operate the Service for you — generating your tan previews, checking those previews for defects, measuring your skin tone, and comparing your check-in photos with your starting photo. We do not use your photos to train AI models, and we do not sell or share them for advertising. See our Privacy Policy for exactly which processors (including Google's Gemini API and, as a backup, OpenAI's API) may see a copy of your photo and why.
You confirm that any photo you upload is either a photo of yourself or a photo you have the right and permission to use, and that it is not of a minor other than yourself if you are a minor with permission to use the Service.
Tan previews are illustrations, not predictions. They are generated or rendered by software from a single photo and are not a reliable forecast of how your actual skin will look after real sun exposure, and not a representation that reaching any particular preview is achievable, advisable, or safe for you. Treat them as a visualization of a shade you chose — nothing more.
Tanli offers auto-renewing subscription plans (currently billed weekly or every three months) and a separate, one-time consumable purchase to retake your reference photo. Prices, billing periods, and any promotional terms are shown in the app at the time of purchase and in your platform's purchase confirmation.
Tanli — its design, code, branding, and in-app content — belongs to Dillon Keating and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. These Terms grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on a device you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or reverse-engineer the app, or use it to build a competing product.
You keep ownership of your own photos. The license you grant us in Section 5 is only what's needed to run the Service for you, and ends when we delete your data per our Privacy Policy.
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, THAT ANY TAN PREVIEW, PHOTO COMPARISON, UV READING, OR OTHER ESTIMATE WILL BE ACCURATE, OR THAT ANY OUTCOME YOU EXPERIENCE FROM USING THE SERVICE WILL MATCH ANYTHING SHOWN IN THE APP. SOME JURISDICTIONS DON'T ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN WARRANTIES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW: TANLI AND DILLON KEATING WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.
WITHOUT LIMITING THE ABOVE, AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, TANLI AND DILLON KEATING ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY SUNBURN, SKIN DAMAGE, PREMATURE AGING, SKIN CANCER OR OTHER MALIGNANCY, EYE INJURY, HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS, OR ANY OTHER BODILY INJURY OR HEALTH CONSEQUENCE ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO SUN OR UV EXPOSURE — WHETHER OR NOT THAT EXPOSURE WAS TIMED, LOGGED, OR VIEWED IN TANLI, AND WHETHER THE CLAIM IS BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY. YOU ASSUME THAT RISK YOURSELF, AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 4.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE, OR (B) US$20.
NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY FOR GROSS NEGLIGENCE, WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT CANNOT LAWFULLY BE LIMITED OR EXCLUDED WHERE YOU LIVE. SOME JURISDICTIONS DON'T ALLOW SOME OF THE LIMITATIONS ABOVE, SO SOME OF THEM MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Dillon Keating and Tanli from any claim, liability, damage, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your violation of these Terms, your misuse of the Service, or content you upload — except where the claim arises from our own violation of these Terms or applicable law.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles, except where applicable consumer-protection law in your own jurisdiction requires otherwise.
We'd rather resolve a problem directly — email us first at dillonkeating20@gmail.com and we'll try to sort it out. If that doesn't work, you and Tanli agree that any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved by binding, individual arbitration rather than in court, except that either party may bring an individual claim in small-claims court, and either party may seek injunctive relief in court for misuse of intellectual property. You and Tanli each waive the right to a jury trial and to participate in a class action or class arbitration. You may opt out of this arbitration agreement by emailing us within 30 days of first accepting these Terms.
Changes to these Terms. We may update these Terms as the Service changes. If a change is material, we'll update the "Effective" date above; continuing to use Tanli after a change takes effect means you accept it.
Termination. You can stop using Tanli and delete the app at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms. Sections 4, 5 (as to previews already generated), 8 through 13 survive termination.
Severability. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect, and the unenforceable part will be read to accomplish its intent as closely as the law allows.
Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and Tanli about the Service and replace any earlier agreements on the same subject.
Apple as a third-party beneficiary. Because Tanli is distributed through the Apple App Store, Apple has the right (but not the obligation) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary. Apple is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the Service or its content.
